Singing Tip

This page is an archive of my #singingtip I regularly post on Twitter. Follow me for more!

#singingtip think singing forward, not going up and down. Focus in projecting your voice and let the ears do the pitch control.

#singingtip leave the technical to Ur brain, the mechanical to Ur muscles, and the actual singing to Ur heart.

#singingtip proper preparation prevents poor performance

#singingtip “place” ur tone in ur face mask, not ur throat. That way u will have a good resonance and not putting strain on ur throat.

#singingtip when properly trained, ur body will remember gd posture. so complex coreography wnt compromize w/ ur breathing

#singingtip learning how to hold ur instrument is 1st priority when learning how to play. Holding a vocal instrument is called posture.

#singingtip clearing the throat isn’t really a good habit for singers. Try to clear it by humming instead, or at least do it gently.

#singingtip most pitch problems come from yr ears & diaphragm. yr diaphragm is yr fighting stance, it has 2 B strong.

#singingtip If you feel comfortable with ur singing, the audience with feel comfortable listening to u. How to feel comfortable, w/ practice

#singingtip Singing shld always B expressive. Play arnd w/ ur dynamics (p-ff), emphasize on the rite vowels, belt ur notes, act w/ ur eyes

#singingtip R voice, lk rubber, will expand its range & B more flexible when its warmed up. Warm-up before U rehearse or perform.

#singingtip it’s vry helpful 2 practice singing in front of a mirror 2 check ur posture, breathing, expression, & the overall performance

#singingtip if singing hurts, stop. that’s an indication that something is wrong. consult your vocal coach. or go to a doctor

#singingtip when singing in the lower end of ur range: focus the resonance in the chest area, dont put ur chin down, face fwd. Open throat.

#singingtip dont pull ur stomach in when u inhale. Let in expand naturally.

#singingtip easiest thing u cn do 2 warmup ur voice is by humming in ur range. Hum a maj scale up-down after 1 round move halfstep up, so on

#singingtip Don’t just use your ears (our monitor) to help us sing the right notes, but to avoid the wrong ones as well.

#singingtip sing a long note start off piano cresc to forte, decresc back to piano. a good breathing n dynamics exercise, give u good tone.

#singingtip Grooming = Confidence. Confidence = Good singing. Look good for ur audience :-) )

#singingtip ideally u should only sing/perform in a language u understand or u won’t be able to express the words correctly.

#singingtip ideally, u shouldn’t sing (perform/record) for 3 hours straight. Don’t overdo and tire ur voice. Warm up properly before.

#singingtip we need to have full control over our singing. we shouldn’t let habit control our vocal expression.

#singingtip reading this tweet won’t get u anywhere. Unless u actually get out there and sing! Find more #singingtips on my blog!

#singingtip if you can yell it, you can sing it! but please be careful with tensions, warm up before rehearsing / performing

#singingtip being nervous is part of performing. Even Pavarotti said he’s always nervous before every performance. It’s nooorrmaall…

#singingtip you wont be able to breathe low if you’re not completely relaxed. relax ur shoulders, back, n neck, breathe in, let tummy expand

#singingtip record yourself singing from time to time, to evaluate. Don’t be allergic to critic.

#singingtip for teachers: one of d best feat of a voc teacher is d ability to identify n target specific needs of student.

#singingtip RT @agahonline: apparently even Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Chuck Billy (Testament) do vocal warm ups.

#singingtip treat evry word in a phrase or sentence as equal in terms of energy and handling. singin soft doesn’t mean singin without energy

#singingtip an amateur sings like mariah carey. a professional sings like him/herself.

#singingtip avoid tea, coffee, cream & alcohol before singing as these can have a dehydrating effect.

#singingtip I like coming early to a gig, just to make myself comfortable with the venue, to “feel” the stage before conquering it.

#singingtip look beyond a song, be in the songwriter’s shoes, think about why, how, when d song was written to really get the message

#singingtip when singing impromptu, find the key comfortable to u first. test the key by trying to hit the highest note of the song.

#singingtip Regular exercise: good blood flow, good for ur vocal chord, improves flexibility. Esp. cardio for lung capacity.

#singingtip we can’t always depend on stage monitor; learn to hear urself from inside.

#singingtip when singing a low note don’t put ur face down. Instead face straight and just focus ur resonance in ur chest area.

#singingtip first step in singing, relax; easy stretch ur neck muscles, shoulders, rib and back to relax and “wake” them up at the same time

#singingtip when singing high notes and falseto, concentrate ur resonance in ur head area not ur throat, and support with low breathing.

#singingtip sometimes people who think they can’t sing, can sing like nobody’s business, they just don’t know it yet

#singingtip one of the best ways to practice scat improv is to imitate horn players pick a nice solo and then memorize until you can sing it

#singingtip know what key the song ur singing, know the tempo, decide on the style, etc, take control, know what ur doing.

#singingtip the ability to play basic piano is a big advantage for singers if you can’t do it yet, never too late to learn

#singingtip Sometimes the unability to reach certain note is just a mental problem. Be bold!

#singingtip if ur a singing pianist or guitarist, prctce the song on ur instrmnt until it’s 2nd nature so it wont interfere with ur singing

#singingtip don’t be afraid to open ur mouth, we use the 3 finger rule. Ur mouth should b open enough to fit at least 3 fingers.

#singingtip do ur vocal exercise routine using a piano, this will “calibrate” ur pitch to the standard instrument tuning.

#singingtip good singing is 80% good ear. So make sure you practice enough ear training and be more aware of what you hear in music.

#singingtip why we vocal exercise reason no.2 it will improve our hearing, thus improving our control of pitch

#singingtip if you don’t believe in the lyrics of a song, don’t sing that song. if you don’t believe it, how do you convince your listeners?

#singingtip diction is imprtant wrk on ur english it can make a big difference but still when ur diction is clear ur english can come 2nd

#singingtip [correction] you should NOT be thinking about technique when performing. practice your technique until it becomes second nature.

#singingtip some ppl r skeptical abt how voc exercise can improv singing. 1 thing certain, thse exercises wont do good if not done regularly

#singingtip RT @DailyHealthTips Few crushed cloves and some garlic mixed with honey is a good home remedy for sore throat.

#singingtip maintaining a nice and steady pitch is not easy. but a sharp out of tune is a little better than a flat one.

#singingtip the common theory, we have 3 vocal registers, chest, mix, and head, abov d head reg is falsetto practic sliding updown for unity

#singingtip a good breathing exercise: do a fast nose inhale like when in shock, fill lower stomach, release slowly thru closed teeth “tsss”

#singingtip cont. – see how long u can hold the “tssss” usualy abt 30-45 seconds. Gradually make it longer. Keep a firm ab while releasing

#singingtip instead of focusing on projecting ur voice across the room, its better to focus on resonating it thru the body. Get fuller tone.

#singingtip when not singin in a part of a song dont hold ur mic too far from ur mouth, so ur always ready I like to hold it close my chest

#singingtip a singer must have big enough EGO and CONFIDENCE. not easily intimidated by the audience, and certainly not by other singers.

#singingtip its not recommended to lift ur chest while inhaling however keeping d chest high enough is necessary to optimize breathing

#singingtip cardio exercise sch s fastwalking, running, swimming r good fr singers. improves breathing, lung capacity < singers generator.

#singingtip forget the words in a performance? Just f*** it and make something up, improvise, the show must go on.

#singingtip never underestimate ur audience. you’ll never know. even if there r only 2 people in the audience. just sing ur best. always

#singingtip drinking water wont actually moist the cord rightaway, body need time to distribute water. drink water even before ur thirsty

#singingtip sore throat, don’t sing unless u really have to. Rest ur voice, drink lotsa water. After recovery do a light warmup.

#singingtip breathe low, imagine u r filling up your lungs like u r filling a glass of water. the water fills the bottom first and then up.

#singingtip before a singing exercise routine, stretch n relax ur neck, shoulder, jaw, rib, and back. check ur relax every couple minutes.

#singingtip inhaling from both the nose and mouth is ok. Each technique has its own upsides and downs.

#singingtip “place” ur tone in ur face mask, not ur throat. That way u will have a good resonance and not putting strain on ur throat.

#singingtip always warmup before u actually sing or rehearse. Not only it prepares ur voice for the work, it also ensure ur vocal longevity

#singingtip choose the rite songs for ur voice. If u have a melodic soft warm voice, maybe singing patti labelle ain’t for u. B urself.

#singingtip Hear it inside your head before you actually sing a line or melody. When you open your mouth it’s too late to aim.

#singingtip when u take a breath don’t need to fill up. Try filling up and hold, then try to speak, feel the strain on ur throat? That’s why

#singingtip don’t inhale, pause, n sing, you’ll loose momentum n strain ur voc cord. Just take enough air and sing it.

#singingtip to avoid: sleep deprivation it causes bad singing

#singingtip Increase your air speed for high notes and decrease your air speed for lower notes.

#singingtip learn about vocal technique, breathing, posture, etc. train them until it’s second nature. when ur on stage, forget about it

#singingtip relax the ab muscles while inhaling allow rib cage to open w good posture, when exhaling keep the ab firm and the rib cage open.

#singingtip drink water before ur thirsty. To keep ur voc chord moist. Coffee n alcohol doesn’t count as it dries up the voc chord.

#singingtip What’s a diaphragm? It’s a dome-shaped muscle separating our lungs and heart from our abdomen, plays a big part in our breathing

#singingtip when u make a mistake on stage, just let it go and keep going. If u forget the words to a song, make up ur own. The show must go on

#singingtip a little reminder: why we want to exercise our voice regularly? http://bit.ly/1dyVH

#singingtip Vocal tension is very bad for vocal tone, vocal range, and your physical well being! can cause bad throat! or worse, vocal nodules

#singingtip mic technique; don’t hold it too far or too close from ur mouth, adjust d distance when singin loud, experiment wit angles

#singingtip exaggerate ur diction a little bit, so the audience can hear clearly what words u r singing.

#singingtip u don’t want any kind of carbonated drinks before u perform coz it’ll fill u up wit gas, n trust me, u don’t want that :-)
